Art Deco Minton lustreware comport
Here we have a fascinating Art Deco comport by Minton. Dating to the 1920s this piece, like the moon flasks, is a mix of styles, colours and sources.
The shape is based on examples of pottery from the ancient worlds of Greece and Rome and is rooted in the historicist movement of the end of the 19th century. The decoration however is straight out of the technicolour world of the Art Deco movement which was coined in 1925.
The ground colour is known as lustre and it is a technique that had been decorating ceramic objects from the early 19th century, but here it is used in a striking shade of forest green, giving a very modern and dramatic base for the other hand painted polychrome decoration. The details in the centre and around the edges of flowers, foliage and a large fantastical bird are redolent of old stained glass windows, yet they have a form and tone that could only be from the 20s.
Minton lustre wares were an attempt by the Minton factory to keep up with the changing tastes of the 20th century and were not made in great numbers, making this large piece quite a rare survival of a fascinating period of change, fun and frivolity.
