Minton cloisonné style comport
Minton - 1868
Here is a piece whose decoration is synonymous with Minton, the cloisonné style. Developed by Leon Arnoux in the 1860s, this style of painting, in imitation of the Chinese metal technique of cloisonné enamel, was enourmously popular following its formal debut at the Paris Exhibition of 1867. It is a style that now is very much associated with Dr Christopher Dresser and his superb designs undoubtedly increased the styles popularity.
This low comport from a dessert service is a superb example, showcasing of the rich turquoise and jewel colour details alongside a delicately hand-painted centre. The centre picture shows a bird, possibly a Chinese partridge, amongst foliage.
