Royal Crown Derby trio painted with birds
Royal Crown Derby - 1904
This charming trio is hand painted with mythical birds set within a landscape and accented by floral swags. The cobalt ground and gilding give a brilliance few other backgrounds manage.
The bird is painted in an interesting style, quite particular to Derby at this time. The style pays tribute to ‘Chelsea Birds’ and thence by default, Sèvres, in its form and with the positioning of the bird in an idealised landscape. The manner of the bird itself, however, and the inclusion of delicate swags of flowers in pastel shades is very much in the English tradition.
The pieces are not signed but they bear similarities to the work of Charles Harris a specialist in ‘Chelsea Birds’ and flowers.
Condition: Cup and saucer are in excellent condition. The plate has a small chip on the underside of the rim, not visible from the front.
